Floridian Sunset
Nancy Prince

A favorite of Floridians and Californians is the lofty palm tree. The simplicity in the design makes for an easy adventure in thread painting. Stabilization is the name of the game in thread painting and you will learn secrets on how to prepare your design for a distortion free project. This workshop is easy, fun and totally addictive!

Thread Painting Thread - 40 weight rayon or polyester

  • Trunk - Light variegated brown, medium variegated brown
  • Canopy - Dark green, medium green, dark gold, charcoal
  • Bring additional threads in green, brown and tan in your stash
  • Pre-wind (1) each bobbin with black & white bobbin fill or 60 weight embroidery thread

Notions

  • 6" wooden machine embroidery hoop (available for sale day of class)
  • Basic sewing supplies - scissors, 70/10 or 80/12 machine needles, tweezers, pins, etc
  • Sewing machine
    • Please know how your machine works and make sure it is in good working order before class. For thread painting you will need to know how to drop the feed dogs on your machine, how to adjust your machine for free-motion machine embroidery, how to change the upper tension and know where to change the width on the zigzag stitch. If you are unsure of these machine adjustments, please check with your machine dealer before class. A solid sewing platform is recommended. Thanks for checking this out before class.
  • Open or closed toe free motion, darning or big foot. Open toe foot such as #24 or closed toe #15 for Bernina or a stippling open toe foot for Viking. It is important to see what you are stitching and where the next stitches are going so select the best foot you can for visibility. Visibility on machines with an oval clear plastic foot is practically zero. Cutting away between the two red lines on this type foot works on most machines. Check with your machine dealer for optional free motion feet.
  • Black permanent ultra fine point marker
  • Embroidery or extra bobbin case (only if you have it)

Fabric & Stabilizers - these items available for sale day in workshop

  • (1) 14" x 18" piece of fabric for class, light enough so designs will show up and simple enough not to distract from the thread painting
  • (1) 10" x 12" piece of clear water-soluble stabilizer such as Super Solvy or 4X by Superior
  • (2) 14" x 18" pieces of white cut-away stabilizer backing such as a heavy tear away or Aqua Mesh by OESD or Aqua Magic by Pfaff. Stabilizer can be overlapped to reach 14" wide, it doesn't have to be 14" wide.
    • Please have the stabilizers and fabric cut to size before class
