Thread Painting Simple Flowers – Pansy
3 or 6 Hour Workshop
Nancy Prince

Workshop Description: Thread painting is very simple if taken a step at a time. My step-by-step approach will have you thread painting like a pro in no time. In this workshop you will learn how to choose the right threads, a quick trip into blending and shading and the importance of correct stabilizing and hooping practices. This is a great project for those that haven’t tried thread painting before.

Thread Painting Thread - 40 weight rayon or polyester

  • Petals – Dark, medium, medium light and light purple (all in the same color family), pale yellow

    Colors as shown in order:

    • Isacord 3536 - Dark Purple
    • Isacord 2905 - Medium Purple
    • Isacord 2830 - Medium Light Purple
    • Isacord 2655 - Light Purple

  • Petal center – Bright gold, medium rust
  • Leaves – Dark olive and medium olive
  • Clear invisible thread (available for sale in workshop)
  • Bring additional rayon or polyester threads in greens, purple, yellow, and gold in your stash
  • (1) white and (1) black bobbin fill wound on bobbin or 60 weight fine embroidery thread

NOTE: I am more interested in you learning a technique rather than having the right color of thread. Thread colors above are the colors I used in the project and are provided to give you an idea of what colors to pull from your stash.  It is not necessary to have the exact colors.

Notions

  • 6" wooden or plastic machine embroidery hoop (available for sale in workshop)
  • Basic sewing supplies - scissors, 70/10 or 80/12 machine needles, tweezers, etc.
  • Sewing machine
    • Please know how your machine works and make sure it is in good working order before class. For thread painting you will need to know how to drop the feed dogs on your machine, how to adjust your machine for free-motion machine embroidery, how to change the upper tension and know where to change the width on the zigzag stitch. If you are unsure of these machine adjustments, please check with your machine dealer before class. A solid sewing platform is recommended. Thanks for checking this out before class.
    • Machine should be equipped with the zigzag throat plate.
  • Open or closed toe free motion, darning or big foot. Open toe foot such as #24 or closed toe #15 for Bernina or a stippling open toe foot for Viking. It is important to see what you are stitching and where the next stitches are going so select the best foot you can for visibility. Visibility on machines with an oval clear plastic foot is practically zero. Cutting away between the two red lines on this type foot works on most machines. Check with your machine dealer for optional free motion feet.
  • Black permanent ultra fine point marker
  • Embroidery or extra bobbin case (if you have one)

Stabilizers - this item available for sale in workshop

  • One piece 12" x 12" clear water-soluble stabilizer, such as Super Solvy or 4X by Superior.
  • Please have the stabilizer cut to size before class

Workshop Fee: $1.50 for preprinted designs

Items available the day of class*:

  • $1.00 - Stabilizer kit. Kit contains 1 piece of water-soluble stabilizer
  • $9.50 - 6" Wooden machine embroidery hoop

NOTE: The water-soluble stabilizer is clear and will be used to trace the design to thread paint onto. I will provide the tulle. No fabric is required for this project.
