Simple Thread Painting II
3 Hour Workshop   All Levels
Nancy Prince

Workshop Decription: Designs with a low stitch density are thread painted directly to the quilt top. You will learn the design parameters required for a distortion free design and how and when to use the zigzag and straight stitch. Just by changing the direction of the hoop completely changes the look of the stitch. The designs chosen for this workshop are easy and simple and will prepare you for your own designs later on.

Thread Painting Thread - 40 weight rayon or polyester

  • Tree – variegated brown thread, dark and medium green, variegated green, fall or spring color
  • Bring additional threads in greens, browns, and variegated in your “stash”.
  • Pre-wind (1) bobbin with black bobbin fill or 60 weight fine embroidery thread (bobbins available at workshop)

Notions

  • 6" wooden or plastic machine embroidery hoop (available in class)
  • Basic sewing supplies – scissors, 70/10 or 80/12 machine needles, tweezers, etc
  • Sewing machine
    • Please know how your machine works and make sure it is in good working order before class. For thread painting you will need to know how to drop the feed dogs on your machine, how to adjust your machine for free-motion machine embroidery, how to change the upper tension and know where to change the width on the zigzag stitch. If you are unsure of these machine adjustments, please check with your machine dealer before class. A solid sewing platform is recommended. Thanks for checking this out before class.
  • Open or closed toe free motion, darning or big foot. Open toe foot such as #24 or closed toe #15 for Bernina or a stippling open toe foot for Viking. It is important to see what you are stitching and where the next stitches are going so select the best foot you can for visibility. Visibility on machines with an oval clear plastic foot is practically zero. Cutting away between the two red lines on this type foot works on most machines. Check with your machine dealer for optional free motion feet.
  • Black permanent ultra fine point marker
  • Embroidery or extra bobbin case (if you have one)
