Thread Painting Techniques

The tools for successful thread painting are a sewing machine equipped with a straight and zigzag stitch, the ability to drop or cover the feed dogs and a willingness to learn something new. The process is surprisingly simple if taken a step at a time. In fact, the steps are as simple as 1-2-3… Let’s follow the steps for thread painting a single pumpkin and snow covered tree.

Step 1 - Trace the pumpkin on water-soluble stabilizer film. This acts as a guide to thread paint the design. Step 2 - Outline the pumpkin and the interior lines of the pumpkin using a straight stitch.
Step 3 - Thread paint underlay stitches right to left using a straight stitch. Step 4 - Highlight the top of pumpkin with gold thread using s north to south hoop movement of the hoop.
Step 5 - Rotate hoop so pumpkin is on its side and fill in right and left side of pumpkin with a straight stitch following arc of pumpkin. Step 6 - Completed pumpkin. Bright yellow highlights at top and outlining contour lines of pumpkin.
